Road Trip Along the Greenbrier River

This loop through the southern part of the Greenbrier Valley has the potential to become a day chocked full of adventure if you stop to hike on the Greenbrier River Trail, enjoy a leisurely lunch by the river at Ronceverte Island Park, and take a stroll around Alderson's downtown in search of "lions."

This loop begins and ends in Lewisburg, loosely following the Greenbrier River and its tributaries.

Just east of Lewisburg, parking 1 mile off Route 60 affords easy access to the southernmost point of the 78-mile Greenbrier River Trail. Rated a “Top Ten Hiking Trail” by Backpacker magazine, this rails-to-trail welcomes all non-motorized adventure-goers looking to hike, bike or horseback ride.

Passing through Ronceverte, it’s worth a slight detour to Edgar Avenue, where new shops and cafes are creating an active community hub. Lionakis Diner has people flocking for its friendly service and all-day breakfast menu. It's around the corner from a revitalized local pub, The Sportsman Tavern. Classic pool hall games, including a vintage shuffleboard table, just might bring out your competitive side!

The Greenbrier River literally splits the town of Alderson. Take a stroll across the pedestrian bridge—a perfect photo op for two—and peruse the shops on the south side of town… the historic Art Deco Alderson’s Store and Alderson Artisan Gallery are musts!

Alderson Store

Built in the 1930's, Alderson's Store features pristine art deco design inside and out.

Looping back to Lewisburg, make time for a detour to the valley’s “newest” historic site. The Blue Sulphur Springs Pavilion is the only surviving structure from a 19th-century resort. Another easy side trip, the Herns Mill Covered Bridge, is one of two covered bridges in the valley. Yes, another iconic photo stop to remember your time together!
