Step back in time at the gracious French Goat, a former home in Lewisburg’s Historic District showcasing high ceilings, ornate fireplaces, dazzling chandeliers and a fountain-centered garden. Savor classic French cuisine from a menu featuring petite plates such as Sautéed Mussels, Escargot Cassoulet and a shareable artisan cheese plate drizzled with local honey. Designed to resemble a mid-1800s “public house,” The Livery Tavern offers a soaring beamed ceiling and plenty of polished wood, setting the scene for a romantic evening. Craft cocktails start the evening off right, perhaps with a tangy Livery Lemonade or a recent customer favorite, the Porch Spring Spritz. More rave reviews accompany the Tavern’s signature Brussels Sprout Salad, which sets the stage nicely for the house-cut Filet au Poivre, draped in a Cognac cream sauce or Pecan-Crusted Local Rainbow Trout.

Once a humble neighborhood grocery store, the Stardust Cafe exudes a homey air with soft linens, friendly service and a view of downtown Lewisburg’s Washington Street that has changed little since the early 20th century. Diners say visitors can’t go wrong with either the aptly named Trust Me Salad or the Lobster and Artichoke Dip, generously portioned for two to share. The Historic General Lewis Inn boasts an array of nooks and crannies where couples can find space for those private moments over a glass of wine. Supper settings range from a timeless dining room and adjacent cozy lounge to an airy veranda and quiet garden. Weekend diners may want to begin with a small plate (or two!); popular choices include Smoky Bacon-Wrapped Dates and the house-made Crab Hush Puppies. Fresh Mountain Trout and authentic Southern Fried Chicken are both testaments to the difference true farm-to-table ingredients bring to a dish.

Named in honor of NBA and West Virginia University basketball legend Jerry West — a West Virginia native — Prime 44 West at The Greenbrier is the ultimate high-end steakhouse. Standing in contrast to a memorabilia-filled entryway likely to stir glory-day memories in sports fans, the rich red and gold ambiance of the dining room, coupled with the privacy afforded by intimate booths, sets the stage for cocktails or wine, fine food and relaxed conversation. Chef Bryan Skelding tells of a typical roster of dishes he and his wife might share at their “Table for Two” at 44 West: Starters — Duo of Hudson Valley Foie Gras with a savory brûlée, and table-side service of Caesar salad. Located inside White Sulphur Springs’ former high school — now a fully accessible boutique hotel — The Schoolhouse Varsity Club features original exposed brick walls punctuated by soaring industrial windows, and is home to a cozy bar at one end of the dining room. Tufted leather banquettes and plaid fabric-clad chairs add to the charm. With its decidedly southern flair, the menu tempts diners with house favorites such as She Crab Soup, decadent Shrimp & Grits (the Tasso ham gravy is a revelation) and hearty Chicken Cordon Bleu.
