Second Creek

Along the Greenbrier–Monroe county line, Second Creek offers one of the region’s most respected trout fisheries. This stretch is designated Special Regulation Waters, reserved for fly fishing only and managed as catch-and-release, creating conditions that reward patience and skill.

Stocking on Second Creek is listed as varied, though anglers can typically expect at least a spring release to kick off the season. From there, success shifts to timing and technique. As insect hatches begin to build, clear water and steady flows make presentation critical, and those who carry a thoughtful mix of nymphs, dry flies and streamers are far more likely to see results.

The creek’s rocky, gravel bottom allows for relatively easy wading, letting you work the banks and deeper runs where trout hold. It’s technical fishing set against a picturesque backdrop, the kind of place that feels worth returning to again and again.
